Background
Centuries ago, there were two seeds, meant to be planted at either end of the world. One would grow the tree of Balance, the other the tree of Chaos. Once these seeds were planted and reached full maturity, the world would be made into a paradise. Upon hearing that the promised paradise would not come for many more years, long after Kurai and a hundred generations had lived and died, Kurai became angry. He forsook his religion and sought out the young saplings, then cut them down. The sap of the ruined trees granted him longevity and power, but the gods were outraged at his sacrilege. They sealed Kurai in a prison far removed from the many societies of the world, and created two new seeds. This time, fearing that the seeds might be sought and destroyed by others like Kurai, the seeds were given the shape of mortals. The seed of Balance became a man, Rudin, and the seed of Chaos became a woman, Taimo. As brother and sister, they were taught of the world in which they lived, and were commanded that when they had matured, the world would then know paradise.
For one hundred years, Rudin and Taimo traveled the lands in peace, learning of the people, animals, rocks, and plants. Every day, their knowledge and wisdom increased, and they slowly began to mature. The stories of Kurai and his crimes were passed down to young acolytes who followed the gods. One young skeptic, named Mazir, did not believe the tales. He sought out the prison where Kurai was rumored to be held, and saw no sign of the gods. Feeling that his skepticism justified his beliefs that the gods did not exist, he accidentally weakened the seals when he vandalized the cavern walls. Kurai was released. Kurai immediately felt the presence of the new seeds and sought them out. Once he discovered Rudin and Taimo, he corrupted them, placing them under an enchantment that forced them to forget their heritage and see him as their true Creator.
Mazir, realizing the terrible crime he had committed, begged the gods to forgive him and to help him right his wrongs. He was both blessed and cursed with long life, and the power of the sages was awakened in his blood. If he did not succeed in sealing away Kurai, they would take Mazir's powers and his life.
Rudin and Taimo, now believing themselves to be mortals serving their god, began to learn the art of battle and destruction. Under Kurai's command, they began to seize control of villages and counties, with an eye on the kingdom itself. Taimo volunteered to infiltrate the castle as a tactician for hire, offering to train the guards and prepare them for the invasion at hand. Unaware of her true intentions, the king was impressed by Taimo's unmatched swordsmanship and command of destructive magic, and assigned her to prepare his men for war. She was also to train Deremis, the king's son.
However, as Taimo spent time with Deremis, she began to fall in love with him. She assured her brother and Kurai that this would not interfere with their plans; she intended to spare the prince and proceed with the invasion as planned. Deremis, however, was betrothed by the king to the princess of a neighboring kingdom, as the marriage would unite their lands to stand against the threat Kurai presented. Taimo was furious, and believed that Deremis had betrayed her. In a fit of grief and rage, she took half of Kurai's forces and marched on the border town between the two kingdoms. Everyone in the town was slaughtered, save one that Taimo spared to tell the king of what he saw.
Deremis refused to believe that Taimo was responsible, but when the survivor described her appearance and abilities, there could be no doubt. Deremis hardened his heart, and promised that he would stop her himself. Kurai's army marched on the castle, with Taimo and Rudin leading two groups to cut off any help that might be incoming from the neighboring kingdom. When Deremis met Taimo on the field, they fought for well over an hour, with neither claiming victory. Both cursed each other, but when the opportunity arose for Taimo to take his life, she found that she couldn't follow through. In her moment of weakness, Deremis thrust his sword into her chest. Taimo offered no resistance.
Immediately regretting what he had done, Deremis tried to bandage her wounds. He was stopped by a hooded man: Mazir. Mazir used his abilities to heal Taimo's injury and undo the corruption laid on her by Kurai. As she came to her senses, she begged Deremis for forgiveness, and the two decided that they would stop Kurai and free Rudin from his control as well. Kurai, angered at Mazir's interference, fought with the sage as Rudin faced down his sister. Believing that her actions of betrayal came from her attachment to Deremis, he killed the prince. Griefstricken, Taimo struck down her brother, but was only able to exchange a few last words with Deremis before he died.
Mazir defeated Kurai and sealed him away, fulfilling his promise, but the damage inflicted on the minds of Taimo and Rudin was too deep. He could heal Rudin's injuries, but it would be many, many years before the last of Kurai's influence could be pulled out of the very fiber of their beings. He placed Rudin into a deep hibernation. Taimo insisted that she should be destroyed for her crimes, inconsolable after Deremis's death. However, Mazir was able to persuade her with the promise that one day Deremis would be born again into a new life, and when the time was right, the two would meet again. Reluctantly, she agreed, and went into hibernation like her brother.
Five hundred years passed. An earthquake shook the cavern where the brother and sister slumbered, cracking the field of force that held Taimo and collapsing the chamber where Rudin slept. Taimo awoke prematurely, unable to remember anything about who she was or the events of her past. Confused and groggy, she wandered free. While passing through the woods, she was set upon by bandits. While her mind had forgotten her past, her body's instincts reacted instantly, and she soundly thrashed the lot of them. They surrendered hastily, offering to make her their leader if she would spare their lives. Having nowhere else to go, she accepted, and took the name Faetan.
* * * * *
[The following history is what Faetan believes to be the truth, and what nearly anyone else from her world would confirm if they know of her.]
Though Faetan has never met her mother, she's been told that she has demon's blood in her, and this is why she's grown up so fierce and strong. Her father, whom she didn't meet until long after she'd established herself as the Sea Demon, revealed himself to be a handsome world-hopping immortal who can best be likened to a type of demigod. She may have picked up her strength and longevity from him, but she doesn't know for certain. She also doesn't care.
In her early adulthood, she began as a simple thug, robbing people on the main highway, and thrashing the competition. Before long, she chose to start recruiting rather than thrashing, and slowly gathered herself a motley crew of thieves and cutthroats. They raided villages, then turned to the sea to start many years of pirating. Faetan had developed a taste for conquest, and was looking for an opportunity to start claiming lands and lordships when her father first appeared on her ship. He took her to several different worlds, opening her eyes to the possibilities that awaited for those who were willing to play the game of politics.
But as a someone who had never known the geography and rules of these new worlds, she was unprepared for the opposition, and was nearly killed in her first couple of raids. She experienced several humiliating defeats, and retreated to her world of origin to metaphorically lick her wounds and revise her strategies. It was clear that she needed to be far more clever if she hoped to gain any sort of notoriety. She began studying the lore of demons, to see if she could discover any hint of her roots -- not for the sake of family lineage, but to see if she could unlock her potential for power. She was surprised to find that she had a talent for magic that nearly matched her gift for brutality. She also realized that her own forces were ill-suited for conquering worlds, as they did not possess the gifts and talents that she did. It seemed wise for her to begin collecting and organizing allies who were as interested as she was in taking control of these new worlds and reaping the benefits of all the possibilities these worlds had to offer. Fame, power, wealth...it was all ripe for the taking, and under the proper leadership, it would only be too easy.
Personality
Faetan is crude and more than just rough around the edges. She cusses, she drinks, and she doesn't know the meaning of good manners. She had to make her own path for as long as she can remember, and that's the way she likes it. Given the rougher crowds she hangs around with, it's no surprise that she's somewhat mannish in nature. She has a feral, toothy grin that she flashes when she's certain of herself and her goals.
She seems to have a constant chip on her shoulder, and wouldn't miss an opportunity to enjoy a good fight -- because she's used to winning. In her own world, she was a beast with supernatural strength. Her father told her that defeat only makes their kind grow stronger, and though this was probably a lie, she doesn't know that. And because of her fierce belief, it does seem to be having a placebo effect, so maybe it wasn't such a lie after all.
To Faetan, violence was once the solution to all problems. And if violence didn't work, then she wasn't using enough of it. She's since learned that there are certain people who are better suited for certain tasks, and that there is more strength in delegation than going for the prize headfirst like she was formerly accustomed. She just hasn't really had to rely on intelligence and cunning before, so she never bothered. She does seem to have a good grasp of battle tactics, so there's hope for her...but only if she applies herself. Considering her success rate has been enough to register her organization on the Peacekeepers' radar, she seems to be making good progress.
When it comes to her goals, Faetan is cursed with tunnel vision. Nothing else matters once she's determined to make something happen, and it takes a series of drastic defeats to get through to her stubborn mule-headed self and realize "Hey this isn't such a great idea maybe I should reconsider this for a sec."
She's definitely out of her element in technologically advanced civilizations. While she knows more than she did, thanks to her father, she feels ill at ease around places with stupid things like guns and lasers. What's the fun in killing your enemy if you can't even see the shock on his face? She dislikes bows and crossbows for similar reasons, though she's not against using them in a pinch.
As far as sexual relations go, she prefers to avoid romance. An occasional fling with a man who catches her eye is all right, she supposes, but she's not really hung up on the pleasures of the flesh. She's attracted to strength, which she admires, and cunning...which she craves.
If she's got nothing better to do, she can be sociable if she chooses, especially if there's booze and good food at hand. But her ego and crass nature can be off-putting to most folks.
Powers and Abilities
For the time being, Faetan is unnaturally strong, and a powerful warrior in hand-to-hand combat. She loves brawling and cutting down enemies with her scimitar, or a saber if she's got nothing better to use. She is currently learning to utilize destructive magic, particularly fire and earth elemental attacks. Faetan is no longer the beginner she once was, and she can be an unholy terror when she gets serious. She's got power enough to keep the unruly backstabbers in line...at least, for now.
Unknown to Faetan, as the nearly-mature Seed of Chaos, she has enormous destructive potential. If pushed beyond the brink of consuming anger or soul-crushing sorrow, her body changes, transforming her into a hideous winged beast with devastating power to wreak havoc on anyone who stands in her way.
